About the museum

The roughly 500-year-old Glücksburg Castle, together with the Stiftskirche (collegiate church), shapes the skyline of Römhild and recalls the rule of the Counts of Henneberg-Römhild. Since 1979 the municipal museum has been housed in the Hinterschloss. Its collections focus on crafts, decorative arts and ceramics, and most of the exhibitions relate to these themes.

The exhibition "Keramik International" is especially well known. It features unique pieces from the International Ceramics Symposia, which have been held in Römhild every three years since 1975. The works are displayed in the ceramics garden at the castle and in the museum rooms. Every year on the third weekend in August, the Thuringian Ceramics Market takes place in the castle courtyards. A special collection by the Greek Mavrogordato family includes pieces from Roman and Greek antiquity as well as artist and character dolls from the first half of the 20th century.

The Hönn’sche Sammlung documents rural trades and farming in the region with tools and period rooms, with a focus on the pottery craft of Römhild. Since 2013 the fire brigade museum has shown around 700 exhibits, including a fire bucket from the 17th century. A toy exhibition with dollhouses, toy shops and wooden toys, as well as the history of the castle, the town and its notable personalities, complete the visit. The annual program also includes concerts, readings, lectures and film evenings.
