About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Rodach dates back to 1905: then town chamberlain Ferdinand Berner called on citizens for donations, and in the upper floor of the town hall the first “Altertumssammlung” (antiquities collection) was set up. In 1931, after a renovation of the town hall, the collection was reorganized and extended to four rooms in the attic. After it had almost been forgotten, the Rückertkreis, founded in 1976, reorganized the collection in December 1978 and reopened it.
On May 27, 1982, the museum moved into the attic of the hunting palace, which received a new purpose as the “Haus des Gastes” (visitor center). Duke Franz Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld had the palace built to designs by Johann David Steingruber in the Margrave style; it was occupied in 1749. The Rückertkreis Bad Rodach e.V. set up the rooms, incorporating Berner's collections, and has looked after the house on a volunteer basis ever since.
Today the collection comprises more than 5,000 objects. The permanent exhibition in four rooms covers the political and economic history of Rodach and everyday life, commemorates Friedrich Rückert, shows stoneware from the Max Roesler fine stoneware factory (1895–1943) together with its successors Siemens and Valeo, and is devoted to the toy industry with objects from Christian Hofmann & Co and HABA.
