About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Neapolis was established before the Second World War and within a few years had gathered around a thousand objects, which came mainly from the Merambello province and from other areas of the prefecture. During the occupation, thanks to the care of the temporary antiquities curator Emmanouil Mavroeidis, the collection was protected in the basement of the club.
It is housed in a building that was transferred to the Ministry of Culture by the Ministry of Health and the municipality. It includes finds from excavations by the French School at Athens at Elounda, at Ellinika and at Drero, finds of Mavroeidis from a Late Minoan tomb at Tourloti in Sitia and from a Hellenistic tomb at Kalo Chorio (ancient Istrona), as well as antiquities from Agios Nikolaos and other areas of the prefecture, and a numismatic collection.
