About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion is located at the entrance to the town for anyone arriving from Mesogeia. It is a single-storey building from the 1970s, with exhibits spread over two rooms, in the courtyard and around it. The building also houses storerooms and an antiquities conservation workshop. The museum welcomes many school groups as part of its educational programmes.
It holds finds from the wider Lavreotiki area, including Sounion and Thorikos, and from the mining and metallurgical workshops, and shows aspects of human life and activity from 5000 BC to the 6th century AD. Of particular importance are the relief slabs from the frieze of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, as well as funerary and votive reliefs from the ancient demes of Lavreotiki.
