About the museum
In the heart of the Lavreotiki peninsula and the Sounion National Forest Park stretch the galleries and shafts of the ancient silver mines, together with the workshops for cleaning the ore. The silver of Lavrio built the Athenian fleet that defeated the Persian fleet in the straits of Salamis in 480 BC.
In the fenced archaeological site of Dryomos I, within the forest, the visitor can see a large complex of cleaning workshops, the “washing plants”. These are impressive remains of pioneering technology which, through the recycling of water, achieved the best yields of silver and lead during the smelting of the ore.
On the free walk of Dryomos II the visitor grasps the great extent of the installations. For their safety, walkers must always stay on the marked routes.
