About the museum

The Archaeological Museum of Pyrgos is housed in the neoclassical building of the former Municipal Market, one of the most important neoclassical buildings in the region. It was built around 1890 and is tentatively attributed to the German architect Ernst Ziller. Until the late 1960s it served as the city's Municipal Market.

The idea of converting it into a museum was first put forward in 1962, but was only implemented from 1995, when the Municipality of Pyrgos transferred the building to the Ministry of Culture. Its restoration was funded by the third Community Support Framework and completed in 2005. The museum was inaugurated in 2013.

On the ground floor, in about 650 m² of exhibition space, around 1,700 exhibits from all periods from across Ilia are displayed, from Vouprasia in the north to Triphylia, and from the mountainous interior of Ilia to the coast. The exhibits are arranged in thematic sections on settlements, religion, people and ideas, and shed light on historical events, social organisation, everyday life and the beliefs of the inhabitants of Ilia.
