About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Thyrreion is one of the oldest local museums in Aitoloakarnania. The building stands on a plot donated by the community of Thyrreio in 1959, and the museum first opened in 1962. It is located at the entrance to the village, about 10 km southeast of Vonitsa.
The collection includes rich epigraphic material, sculptures, grave stelae and grave goods from the cemeteries of ancient Thyrreion, Palairos and other towns in the Ambracian Gulf region. The finds date from the Archaic to the Roman period and come mainly from handovers and salvage collections. Ancient Thyrreion was an important town of Akarnania and, after 170 BC, the capital of the Akarnanian League (Koinon).
The exhibition, in its present form since 2002, is spread over two rooms. Highlights include a marble grave relief with a seated female figure, a work from an Attic workshop of the 4th century BC, a relief with Nymphs from Palairos, and a group showing Mithras with a lion. On the outdoor terrace, architectural fragments and large inscriptions are displayed.
