About the museum
Anyone who wants to learn what life was like in a Minoan town can visit Gournia. The settlement, a characteristic example of a Minoan town, flourished between 1550 and 1450 BC and included the palace of a local ruler and a sanctuary dedicated to the Snake Goddess.
The ancient name of the town has been lost. Its present name is due to the stone and wooden troughs (gournes) found in the area.
