About the museum
The Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos was founded in 1978 by the Eastern Crete Cultural Development Society, with the aim of highlighting the folklore heritage of the area. It is a private museum and is housed in the old Harbour Master’s Office, next to Lake Voulismeni, on Konstantinou Palaiologou Street. Most of the exhibits are donations from the Touring Club of Agios Nikolaos.
The collection includes authentic and rare examples of Cretan art, mainly woven textiles and embroideries, objects of everyday use from a traditional Cretan household, old sacred icons, carved small objects, manuscripts and liturgical books, old documents of local history, agricultural tools, a loom, photographs, coins and traditional musical instruments.
The collection of weapons of General Ioannis Alexakis is impressive, with pieces from the Ottoman period and from the Balkan Wars, as well as the collection of tsevredes (traditional Cretan towels) and other embroideries, a donation from Chrysoula Xanthoudidou-Koundourou.
