About the museum
The archaeological site of Peristeria, about 8 kilometres from Kyparissia, was not named “Mycenae of western Peloponnese” by chance. The excavations begun by Spyridon Marinatos in 1960 brought to light four tholos tombs, part of a palatial building and many houses, dating from 2200 to 1200 BC. It is even argued that the largest tomb belonged to King Nestor of Pylos.
Regardless of the truth, the abundance of precious objects found in the tombs, such as gold cups, jewellery and vessels, which are displayed today in the Archaeological Museum of Chora, testifies to the noble origin of the dead. The area is also remarkable for its natural beauty; it is worth combining the visit with a walk in the lush gorge of Peristeria (Neraidorema) and to its cave.
