About the museum
The Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania is housed in the katholikon of the former Franciscan monastery of San Salvatore, built in the 15th century next to the bastion of the same name of the Venetian walls. The church was originally single-aisled with reinforcing arches. In the 16th century it was extended to the west, acquired a roofed peristyle with cells on the south side, and also served as a hospital. During Ottoman rule it was converted into a mosque, the mosque of Aga Han.
Since 1997 it has housed the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection. The exhibition includes selected works of art and everyday objects from the whole regional unit of Chania, such as mosaics, funerary inscriptions, wall paintings, icons, architectural sculptures and ceramics. The exhibits come from excavations by the Ephorate of Antiquities, from other collections and from donations, and are presented in chronological order.
