About the museum
The Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology in Heraklion was inaugurated on 24 June 2019. It is housed in the Venetian Ittar mansion at 18 Epimenidou Street, a 15th-century building in the historic centre of the city, near Plateia Liontarion. It belongs to the network of museums of Kostas Kotsanas, which also has other museums in various parts of Greece.
The permanent exhibition “Ancient Greece – The Origins of Technologies” presents dozens of working reconstructions of ancient mechanisms and inventions: war machines, hydraulic systems, automata and early computing devices. Among them are the water clock of Ctesibius, the self-moving automaton theatre of Heron and the Antikythera Mechanism. The exhibits are accompanied by audiovisual material in Greek and English.
