About the museum
The Heraklion Museum of Visual Arts (METI) was founded in May 2000 as a non-profit company by Kostis and Eirini Schizakis. In its first years it focused on building the collection and on supporting the work of Cretan artists.
In 2006 the cataloguing of the collection’s works and the publication of a catalogue began, and the first exhibition took place in early 2007 on contemporary art in Crete. Since 2014 the museum has extended its activity to artists from all over Greece and organises exhibitions in the hall at 3 Nymfon Street, as well as in other venues in Greece and abroad.
The collection includes prints, paintings and sculptures, and some of them are of particular importance for contemporary Greek art. Each exhibition makes use of a different selection of artists and works from the collection.
