About the museum
The Koumantareios Gallery is the first branch of the National Gallery outside Athens. It was founded in 1982, when the children of Ioannis Koumantaros, Dolly Goulandris and Georgios Koumantaros, donated the neoclassical building and their father’s collection.
The Koumantaros Collection is displayed on the ground floor, with European painting from the 16th to the 19th century on a variety of subjects. The first floor was fully renovated in 2018 and houses the permanent exhibition, a concise survey of modern Greek art from the early years of the Greek state to the present day. Subjects presented include history painting, portraiture, antiquity, scenes of everyday life, symbolism, plein-air painting, the question of Greek light and identity, and abstraction, with works by Vryzakis, Lytras, Gyzis, Chalepas, Parthenis, Moralis, Kapralos and Fassianos, among others.
