About the museum
The “House of Mosaics” is a distinctive architectural site with a unique history, which begins in the Roman imperial era and reaches the present day. The two mosaics, which depict the Abduction of Europa and Orpheus playing the lyre, are elaborate floors from two rooms of neighbouring luxurious Roman villas. They were created in the second half of the 3rd century AD and at the beginning of the 4th century AD respectively.
The construction of two protective shelters at the end of the 19th century, in effect a new peristyle housing the ancient mosaics, was decisive for their preservation. In 2020, as part of an exclusive donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the site was redesigned and reopened to the public.
