About the museum
The Holy Monastery of Odigitria of Gonia is located near Kolymvari, on the Rodopou peninsula of Chania. It was built from 1618 to 1637 by the monk Vlasios, who came from Cyprus, and was dedicated to the Virgin Hodegetria. During the last decades of Venetian rule it became an important centre for monks and ascetics. The monastery was repeatedly destroyed and looted under Ottoman rule and during the German occupation.
The museum of the monastery presents icons from the 14th century onwards, works by painters of the Cretan School, manuscripts and early printed books, sacred vestments and vessels. Among the exhibits are icons of the Crucifixion, of Saint Nicholas (1637), of the Transfiguration and of the Virgin Eleousa, as well as two old monastic codices with information on the history of the monastery.
