About the museum
The Byzantine Museum of Veria is housed in an industrial building of the early 20th century, the water-powered flour mill of Stergios Markou. The mill was built between 1908 and 1911 to designs by German engineers and operated until the 1960s. A period of neglect followed, and in August 1981 the building was completely destroyed by fire.
In the 1990s the building was restored and repurposed, a project that was awarded by Europa Nostra. In 2002 the first permanent exhibition was inaugurated and the building was opened as a museum.
The history, life and art of Veria unfold across the four-storey stone mill, from the age of Constantine the Great to the liberation of the city from the Ottomans in 1912. The building itself is the last exhibit of this chronological route. Through its permanent museological programme and its temporary exhibitions, the museum presents the cultural heritage of Veria from the Byzantine, post-Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
