About the museum
The Gödöllői Városi Múzeum operates in the estate inn built in the 1760s in the centre of the town. The collection was founded on the local history circle started in 1952 by Heltai Miklós (1909–1989), since earlier Gödöllő collections had been destroyed during the Second World War. The school exhibition became a Local History Collection by 1978, and ten years later it was given museum status.
The institution is classified as a regional museum and has a national collecting remit for the material of the Art Nouveau artists’ colony in Gödöllő. The maintaining body, Gödöllő Municipality, renovated the building in 1999, which increased the exhibition space. In 2001 the museum received the title “Az Év Múzeuma” (Museum of the Year).
Four permanent exhibitions are on show in the exhibition rooms, and one or two temporary exhibitions open each year in the temporary exhibition room. The museum also cares for several independent private collections, including the material of the Mária Múzeum from Máriabesnyő, the collection of the Hungarian Scout Association, the legacy of Csupor Zoltán Mihály, parish priest of Tordas, and the collection of Ignácz Ferenc from Papua New Guinea. The museum also provides professional oversight of the Nagy Sándor House.
