About the museum
The Közlekedési Múzeum (Transport Museum) is a collection presenting the history of transport in Hungary, established almost 120 years ago. For a long time it was housed in Városliget, in one of the most splendid buildings of the Millennium Exhibition. The exhibition space there covered around 4,500 m²; the collection held railway, road, shipping, air and urban transport objects alike.
After the demolition of the building in Városliget, the museum has not been open to visitors. In 2017 the government decided that the main venue of the Transport Museum would be created at a new location, on a larger area than previously planned, where railway vehicles, buses and trams could also be fully presented. For Városliget, the reconstruction of the historic hall had been planned, which would be the venue for presenting technical museology and Hungarian inventions.
Since 2009 the museum has been part of the Magyar Műszaki és Közlekedési Múzeum (Hungarian Museum of Technology and Transport), which was formed by merging with the Országos Műszaki Múzeum (National Technical Museum). The other venues of the merged institution, such as the Műszaki Tanulmánytár (Technical Study Collection), the Elektrotechnikai Gyűjtemény (Electrotechnical Collection) and the Öntödei Gyűjtemény (Foundry Collection) in Budapest, can be visited separately. The collection’s new permanent home is being planned in Kőbánya, on the site of the Északi Járműjavító (Northern Vehicle Repair Works).
