About the museum
The Néprajzi Múzeum (Museum of Ethnography) in Budapest is one of Europe’s earliest ethnographic institutions. Its history counts 5 March 1872 as its birthday, when Xántus János was appointed curator of the Ethnographic Department of the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum (Hungarian National Museum). The earliest precursor of the collection was 92 objects collected by Reguly Antal between 1843 and 1845 among the Ob-Ugric peoples of the Northern Urals.
Jankó János played a decisive role in establishing the collection; he also gave his name to the ethnographic village in Városliget created for the 1896 Millennium Exhibition. In the first one and a half centuries of its history, the museum fought for a suitable building and a safe home for its collections.
This struggle ended in 2022, when the museum moved into its new home in Városliget, on Dózsa György út. As the new gateway to Liget, the building forms two wings beside the 56-os nemzeti emlékhely (National Memorial of ’56). Its collection now comprises more than 235,600 ethnographic objects, including the country’s largest collection of cultures outside Europe. The collection exhibition opened on 10 October 2024 as the fifth permanent exhibition in the museum’s history.
