About the museum
The museum was founded in 1919 by Hopp Ferenc (1833–1919), art collector, world traveller and patron: in his will he left his Eastern collection of around four thousand objects to the state, with the aim of creating a museum of Eastern art from it. Hopp bought the villa on Andrássy út that is now home to the museum in the 1880s, and furnished it with the exotic objects and plants he had brought back from his travels.
The garden laid out around the villa was already one of Pest’s landmarks in Hopp’s time. He created it on the basis of his experiences in the botanical garden of Bogor (then called Buitenzorg), with the collaboration of the architect Györgyi Géza and the garden artist Starek Ignác. The garden does not follow a single Asian garden style; it combines the impressions of his journeys, and its structure is reminiscent of Japanese tea gardens: the stone lantern, the granite pagoda and the stone basin called tsukubai also evoke this atmosphere.
Since its foundation the museum has been Hungary’s only museum of Eastern art; its collection now numbers around 30,000 objects and covers the whole of Asia. Its temporary exhibitions present various areas of the Asian collecting field, and the villa also houses the country’s only specialist library of Eastern art, which serves to make Asian cultures, particularly visual art, known and popular.
