About the museum
The Fræðasetur um forystufé (Centre for Leader Sheep) at Svalbarð in Þistilfjörður is devoted to the forystufé, a distinctive Icelandic sheep breed. Leader sheep walk ahead of the flock when it is being driven, and the other sheep follow them. Leader sheep have existed in Iceland for centuries and have always been highly valued: a good leading ram could find the best route in bad weather and was known for its weather sense.
The centre has an exhibition with pictures, stories and information about leader sheep. A small shop sells handmade products made from the wool, horns, bones and hides of leader sheep. The centre also runs a café and a small gallery where an art exhibition is held every summer. It has received recognition from the Icelandic Farmers' Association for its use of the wool, hides and horns of the sheep. There is a guesthouse with 12 beds on site.
