About the museum
Sauðaneshús on Langanes, about 7 km north of Þórshöfn, is a stone house of grey basalt (grágrýti) built in 1879. It was a vicarage and is the oldest stone house in the Þingeyjarsýsla counties. The house was abandoned around 1957 and stood empty for just under 40 years.
Around 1990 it was decided to rebuild the house. It was almost entirely reconstructed from the foundations, a project that took about 11 years. It is now run as a museum by Menningarmiðstöð Þingeyinga (Cultural Centre of Þingeyjarsýsla).
The exhibition “Að sækja björg í björg” tells of life on Langanes at the time when the house was inhabited and the vicarage was the centre of the community. It presents notable residents and occupations, such as the role of the vicar’s wife and of the farmhands, as well as nature and birdlife in the area.
