About the museum
Breiðdalssetur is housed in the old co-operative store at Breiðdalsvík and brings together research and exhibitions. The centre is connected with the geology of East Iceland and commemorates two scholars: the geologist George Walker, who studied the rock layers of the region, and the linguist Stefán Einarsson, who was born in Breiðdalur.
The centre has an exhibition on drill cores and how they shed light on the geological history of Iceland, including Surtsey and the stack of lava layers in East Iceland. There are also exhibition spaces dedicated to Walker and Stefán Einarsson. An exhibition on the history of the village, “Bernskublíð Breiðdalsvíkur” (The Childhood Days of Breiðdalsvík), opened at the centre in 2012.
Admission to the centre is free. In winter there are no fixed opening hours, but staff are usually on site on weekdays, and visits can be arranged in advance.
