Opening hours

About the museum

The Transport Museum at Stóragerði in Skagafjörður opened on 26 June 2004; it was opened by Ársæll Guðmundsson, then chief executive (sveitarstjóri) of Skagafjörður. The museum began in a 600 m² hall with a small reception area. In autumn 2010 an extension of 800 m² began, with a larger reception, and the work was completed in summer 2013.

The founders were Gunnar Kr. Þórðarson, master motor mechanic, and Sólveig Jónasdóttir, primary school teacher. Gunnar collected objects from an early age and restored cars and machines. He died in February 2019 after a long battle with motor neurone disease (MND). Sólveig continues to run the museum with the family, and their sons Jónas and Brynjar have added equipment from the 1980s–2000s.

The museum has around 100 vehicles and objects on display, including cars, a bus, motorcycles, sleds, agricultural machinery and aviation-related items. Outside there are a further 150–200 cars and machines in varying condition. South of the museum is a workshop where equipment is restored, and the museum has a hall that holds up to 70 people.
