About the museum

Adare Heritage Centre stands on Main Street in the heart of Adare, a village known for its thatched cottages and medieval religious houses. The present building dates from the 1990s and also houses the library, a restaurant and craft and woollen shops. Limerick City and County Council has approved plans for a larger redevelopment before the 2027 Ryder Cup at nearby Adare Manor.

The free historical exhibition traces the story of Adare from the arrival of the Normans in the twelfth century through the founding of its medieval abbeys to the influence of the Earls of Dunraven. A scale model shows the village as it may have looked around 1500, with its monasteries, castles and thatched houses, and a multilingual audio guide accompanies the displays.

In the summer season the centre is the starting point for guided tours of Desmond Castle, a thirteenth-century fortress on the banks of the River Maigue, which can only be visited through the centre. Visitors are taken to the castle by minibus.
