About the museum

Limerick City Gallery of Art is housed in the Carnegie Building on Pery Square, beside People's Park, a Romanesque Revival building completed in 1906 as a Carnegie library and museum. The city's art collection was established in 1936 as the Limerick City Collection of Art, and it later took over the Carnegie building and gained a purpose-built extension.

The gallery describes itself as the largest contemporary art gallery in the Mid-Western Region. It shows several exhibitions a year by Irish and international artists and has been a main venue for EVA International, Ireland's contemporary art biennial. Its permanent holdings include an extensive collection of Irish art, with a focus on the 18th to 20th centuries.

The gallery is run by Limerick City and County Council and offers free admission. Alongside the exhibitions it runs an education programme with school tours, family workshops, children's activities and sessions designed for sensory and accessibility needs. The Zest Café is inside the building.
