About the museum

Belturbet Station was built in 1885 and is the only station on the Great Northern Railway system built entirely of cut stone. It was the northern terminus of the Cavan and Leitrim narrow gauge railway, whose line also served Ballyconnell, Ballinamore, Dromod and Arigna, and it connected with the Great Northern broad-gauge branch to Ballyhaise.

The Cavan and Leitrim was one of the busiest narrow gauge railways in Ireland. It stayed open for years after most other three-foot gauge lines had closed, and it was the only steam-operated passenger narrow gauge line throughout its whole operation. The station had both broad-gauge and narrow-gauge trains.

The station has been fully restored and now houses an exhibition on the railway age in County Cavan. Visitors can also see restoration projects at the station, a restored goods yard and crane, a Ruston engine and a selection of antique machinery from rural Ireland. The museum is run by volunteers and hosts cultural events and Heritage Week programmes.
