About the museum
The Aughakillymaude Mummers Centre occupies the former Aughakillymaude National School, a listed building of 1888 on the shore of Upper Lough Erne near Derrylin. It was restored and converted by the Aughakillymaude Community Association with funding from the International Fund for Ireland and other bodies, at a cost of about £266,000, and was launched as a new tourism centre.
The centre presents the local tradition of mumming, in which masked performers act out traditional plays in the district. It has an exhibition on the tradition, life-size figures of the mumming characters, an archive on mumming in Ireland and abroad, and a shop selling straw crafts. Groups and schools can take part in straw-craft and mask-making workshops.
The association also arranges events such as folk music nights, and the local Mummers take part in an annual mumming festival in Fermanagh.
