About the museum
Casino Marino was designed by Sir William Chambers in the 18th century as a pleasure house for James Caulfeild, first Earl of Charlemont. It stood next to his residence in what was then open countryside north of Dublin. The building is regarded as one of the finest neoclassical buildings in Europe.
The word casino here means “little house”. From outside the building looks compact, yet it contains 16 richly decorated rooms. Its exterior is known for fine stone craftsmanship, and the Zodiac Room has a domed ceiling decorated with astrological symbols around its base.
The Office of Public Works looks after the building today. The interior can be visited only on a guided tour.
