About the museum
Castleconnell Heritage Centre is a volunteer project in the ACM Community Centre on Castle Street in Castleconnell, a village on the banks of the River Shannon in County Limerick. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Castleconnell was a popular spa resort for the local gentry and visitors from abroad, with fine Georgian houses, and it became known for its salmon fishing, the Castleconnell fishing rod and the fly-casting champion John Enright.
A group of local people began work on a heritage centre in 2011, and it was formally opened by the local historian Paddy Tuohy on St Patrick’s Day 2016. The centre displays historical artefacts, maps, books, documents and photographs, six display boards on the river, the castle and the great houses of the area, and the War of Independence “Castleconnell Banner”, which was brought back to the village.
The volunteers also record the local graveyards for the online historicgraves.ie project, index the parish records and the local annual, and scan school registers, and visitors can use internet-enabled computers for research. The centre is open every weekday, free of charge.
