About the museum
Kiltyclogher Heritage Centre is housed in the village courthouse, a building of 1831 on Main Street, Kiltyclogher, in north County Leitrim. The centre was officially opened in November 2015, shortly before the centenary of the 1916 Rising. It stands near the birthplace of Seán MacDiarmada, one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.
The exhibition tells the life of MacDiarmada and the history of the surrounding district, using interpretive panels, an audio-visual presentation and a collection of objects on display. Visitors can also learn about local figures and places such as the Tottenham family of Glenfarne and the grave of Prince Connell.
The centre organises guided tours to the MacDiarmada family homestead in Corranmore, about 5 km away. The cottage is a National Monument owned by the Office of Public Works and is a preserved example of a traditional Irish farmhouse. Tours to it are normally booked through the centre.
