About the museum
Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum is a volunteer-run museum above a traditional barber shop at 5 Darling Street in Enniskillen. The barber shop was opened by the brothers Gordon and Nigel Johnston in 1981, and the railway museum followed in 2002, built up with help from former railway employees and enthusiasts. It is run as a charity.
The collection records the railways of County Fermanagh and the border counties, which closed in 1957. It focuses on three companies: the Great Northern Railway (Ireland), the Sligo, Leitrim & Northern Counties Railway and the Clogher Valley Railway. Exhibits include uniforms, signalling instruments, signs, lamps, tableware, timetables, tickets and photographs, many of them donated by former railway staff.
The displays recreate railway working rooms, among them a booking office, a station master's office, a ladies' waiting room and a signal cabin. The General Manager's Office is painted in a trompe l'oeil style. A large model railway is on the second floor. Visitors can combine the museum with a haircut in the barber shop.
