About the museum
The Quiet Man Museum in the village of Cong, County Mayo, remembers the 1951 John Ford film The Quiet Man, with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, which was shot in and around the village. The film brought Hollywood to Cong in the summer of 1951.
The museum is a replica of White O’Morn, the cottage that the film’s hero Sean Thornton buys on his return to Ireland. The original cottage is now a ruin. The museum rebuilds both the outside of the cottage and its interior, which was a studio set in the film, so that the two can be seen together in one place.
Inside are copies of the key furnishings and props, including the big bed, the piano, china, pewter, the cradle and the tandem bicycle, together with costumes made by the same Galway firm, O’Maille’s, that made the originals. Newspaper clippings from 1951 tell the story of the film crew’s stay. Visitors can dress up in costume for photos. A gift shop sells film memorabilia, and a daily walking tour from the museum visits the original film locations in the village.
