About the museum
The Basilica di San Lorenzo is one of the oldest churches in Florence. According to tradition it was consecrated at Easter 393 in the presence of Saint Ambrose, and for centuries it was the seat of the bishops of Florence. Over about sixteen centuries the building has been rebuilt, altered and enlarged, and it has housed many paintings and works of art.
In the 15th century the Medici family linked its name to the basilica, which became the family church. The complex today includes other places linked to their history, such as the Cappelle Medicee with the Mausoleum of the Princes and Michelangelo’s Sagrestia Nuova, and the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, designed by Michelangelo, who personally directed its construction. These two places are visited with separate access tickets.
The ticket for the Complesso della Basilica allows visitors to see the basilica, the Sagrestia Vecchia, the cloisters, the Museo del Tesoro della Basilica, the crypt and the monumental underground chambers. The basilica remains a place of worship, with daily Masses, and for this reason access is subject to respect for silence and appropriate clothing.
