About the museum

The Cappelle Medicee are the burial place of the Medici and form a monumental complex attached to the basilica of San Lorenzo. They are part of the Musei del Bargello and can be visited as a national museum.

The Sagrestia Nuova, designed and decorated by Michelangelo, houses the monumental tombs of members of the Medici family and is one of the masterpieces of 16th-century architecture and sculpture. The Cappella dei Principi, a grand-ducal mausoleum, is clad in marble and pietre dure (hard stones).

The visit begins in the Medici crypt and continues on the upper floors. In an underground room, the Stanza segreta di Michelangelo, visits are made separately and only by booking.
