About the museum

The palace was built from 1444 to a design by Michelozzo for Cosimo the Elder, and it became the main residence of the Medici until 1540, when Cosimo I moved to the Palazzo Vecchio. Piero the Gouty and Lorenzo the Magnificent lived here, and artists such as Donatello, Paolo Uccello, Filippo Lippi and Botticelli worked here.

In 1659 the Riccardi family bought the building and enlarged it, adding among other things the gallery decorated by Luca Giordano in the late 17th century. In the 18th century the palace housed the rich library and collections of the Riccardi.

Since 1874 the palace has belonged to the Province, now the Città Metropolitana di Firenze, which has its institutional seat here. The museum route includes the chapel with the frescoes of the Corteo dei Magi (Procession of the Magi), the courtyard by Michelozzo, the garden and the Baroque gallery; some rooms are dedicated to exhibitions.
