About the museum
Campo del Sole stands at Punta Navaccia, on the shore of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, in an area of considerable natural interest. It was not conceived for a particular event: the sculptures were made in several phases, in the summer of 1985, in the summer of 1986 and between the summer of 1988 and the autumn of 1989, in the workshop of Giulio and Mauro Borgia in Tuoro.
The project is by Pietro Cascella, with the collaboration of Mauro Berrettini and Cordelia von den Steinen, while the scientific direction was entrusted to Enrico Crispolti. About twenty-eight artists took part, including Kengiro Azuma, Mauro Staccioli, Joe Tilson, Luigi Mainolfi, Costantino Nivola, Giò Pomodoro, Leo Lionni and Idetoshi Nagasawa. The entrance structures are the work of Kuo-Wei Tu.
Twenty-seven columns of pietra serena, about 4.5 metres high, form a spiral that leads to a central table with a sun symbol. The site was also chosen for its proximity to the battlefield of Lake Trasimeno, where Hannibal defeated the Romans.
