About the museum
The church of San Sebastiano was built at the end of the 15th century by the community of the castle of Panicale, next to a lazaretto for plague victims and a cemetery. It stands about 250 metres from the town walls, at the end of Borgo Regio. The building, of brick, has a gabled plastered façade; originally it was preceded by a portico, of which two arches remain.
The interior was renovated in 1623. At the beginning of the 17th century the church passed to the Jesuits and later to the nuns of the Collegio delle Vergini, who educated girls there; the dates 1690, 1692 and 1725 visible on the exterior are linked to bequests and works promoted by the nuns.
The main attraction is the fresco by Perugino of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, dated 1505 and protected by barriers, alongside an enthroned Madonna with Child and musician angels in the style of the Perugino school. The visit may be independent or guided, arranged through the Panicale Info Point.
