About the museum

Casa Buonarroti is a museum and monument dedicated to Michelangelo, housed in the houses that the Buonarroti family bought in via Ghibellina. In the 17th century his great-nephew Michelangelo the Younger made it a place to celebrate the great ancestor, with rooms decorated by artists of the time.

The house holds the family’s art collections, its archive and its library. In 1858 the last heir, Cosimo Buonarroti, left the building and the collections to the city of Florence, and the museum opened to the public in 1859.

Among the most important works are two marble reliefs carved by Michelangelo as a young man, the Madonna of the Stairs (Madonna della scala) and the Battle of the Centaurs (Battaglia dei centauri). The museum also holds about 205 autograph drawings by the artist, displayed in rotation in small groups in a room on the piano nobile.
