About the museum
The Jewish Museum of Florence is housed in the Tempio Maggiore, the city's synagogue, because its historical and architectural importance made this the most suitable place: the cellars were rejected because of the risk of flooding. It was promoted by the rabbi Fernando Belgrado and opened in 1981 thanks to a donation, with a first section on the upper floor, behind the women's gallery (matroneo).
A second part, on the top floor, was inaugurated in 2007 and is also devoted to textiles. One room is reserved for the Shoah.
The collections illustrate the Jewish presence in Florence from its origins to 1437, the period of the ghetto, its expansion and its demolition in the 1890s, with photographs, plans and images of the ancient synagogues. Textiles and silverware for worship are on display, mainly from the 16th to the 19th centuries, together with ornaments of the Torah scrolls and objects of domestic devotion; the route is completed by a film about the community, a memorial room and a multimedia station.
