About the museum
The Casa della Resistenza stands at Fondotoce, a hamlet of Verbania, beside the place where, on 20 June 1944, forty-three partisans captured during the round-ups in the Val Grande were shot by Nazi-Fascist units. Carlo Suzzi, known as “Quarantatré” (Forty-three), managed to survive. After the Liberation the site became a symbol of the memory of the Resistance in the Verbano Cusio Ossola.
In 1997 the Resistance organisations, the representatives of political deportees, military internees and the Jewish communities, together with the Istituto storico della Resistenza “Piero Fornara” (Piero Fornara Historical Institute of the Resistance), set up an association to manage the Casa and the monumental area in which it stands. The association carries out research and public education, welcomes school classes, individual visitors and groups, and offers routes along the partisan trails.
The Casa stands in a park of 16,000 square metres, the Parco della Memoria e della Pace (Park of Memory and Peace), which includes a monumental area: the tall cross, the Wall inaugurated in 1964 with more than 1,200 names of the fallen, the urn with ashes from Mauthausen, and various monuments dedicated to women, military internees, Georgian partisans and the Jewish victims of Lake Maggiore. The former Ossolana building, renovated between 2008 and 2009, serves as a detached branch with a store, workshop and archive. The association also runs a library and a documentation centre with a photographic archive.
