About the museum

Casa Guidi is a suite of eight rooms on the noble floor of Palazzo Guidi, in Piazza San Felice, opposite the south wing of Palazzo Pitti. Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning rented one of the two apartments in the palace in 1847, less than a year after their marriage, and lived there for the remaining fourteen years of their married life. Elizabeth named the apartment Casa Guidi after the birth of their son Pen.

In these rooms were written, among other works, Casa Guidi Windows, Aurora Leigh, Men and Women and the first lines of The Ring and the Book. Among the couple’s visitors were Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Trollope family.

After Pen bought the palace in 1893, attempts to create a memorial to his parents came to nothing; the Browning Foundation, founded in 1916, was dissolved in 1931. In 1970 a campaign saved seven of the eight rooms from conversion into offices, and the Browning Institute obtained ownership. In 1993 the property passed to Eton College, which entrusted the restoration to the Landmark Trust; the official opening of the restored rooms took place in July 1995.
