Cappella Brancacci

Chapel of the church of Santa Maria del Carmine with the fresco cycle of the Stories of Saint Peter by Masolino, Masaccio and Filippino Lippi, a masterpiece of the early Renaissance.

About the museum

The chapel, in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, takes its name from the wealthy merchant Felice Brancacci, who in 1423 commissioned the fresco decoration after returning from a mission to Egypt. The chosen theme was the Stories of Saint Peter.

The work was begun by Masolino and Masaccio, but both left Florence before completing it, and the decoration remained unfinished until 1427. After the Brancacci family fell from favour, in 1436 the friars had the portraits of the patrons erased, and in 1460 the chapel was dedicated to the Madonna del Popolo.

The missing scenes were completed by Filippino Lippi between 1481 and 1483. In the mid-18th century the vault and the lunettes were destroyed; a restoration carried out between 1981 and 1989 returned the paintings to their original colours. Today the chapel is managed by the Musei Civici Fiorentini and is visited with limited entries.
