About the museum
The Fondazione Salvatore Romano is housed in the former refectory of the Augustinian convent of Santo Spirito, the Cenacolo, one of the few parts of the medieval convent to survive the 15th-century renovation. In the 19th century the large hall was used as a tram depot and a wall facing the square was opened, destroying Andrea Orcagna's Last Supper; from 1894 to 1928 the sculptor Raffaello Romanelli had his studio there. Above the fragments of the Last Supper is preserved a large Crucifix dating from around 1360–1365.
The museum houses the works donated to the Comune di Firenze in 1946 by the Campanian collector and antiques dealer Salvatore Romano: a collection of sculptures, fragments of architectural decoration, detached frescoes and furnishings, of various origins and dating from ancient Roman times to the 17th century.
Among the best-known pieces are two reliefs attributed to Donatello from Padua (Saint Massimo and Saint Prosdocimo), a high relief of the Madonna and Child by Jacopo della Quercia, and two marbles by Tino di Camaino, a Caryatid and an Adoring Angel, dating from around 1320–1322. The museum is run by the Comune di Firenze with the Fondazione MUS.E.
