About the museum
The collection began with works bought by the City of Rome at the international fine arts exhibition of 1883, and the Galleria comunale d’arte moderna was opened in 1925 at Palazzo Caffarelli. After several locations, in 1995 the museum opened to the public in the former convent of the Carmelitane Scalze next to the church of San Giuseppe a Capo le Case, in Via Francesco Crispi; after a period of closure for restoration, it reopened at the end of 2011.
The convent, founded at the end of the 16th century, was enlarged in the 17th century and from 1879 housed an industrial arts museum. Today the building holds a heritage of over three thousand works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints from the 19th and 20th centuries and the first decades of the new century, with particular attention to the Scuola romana and to the developments of abstraction and Informel after the war.
The collection is displayed in rotation, also through temporary exhibitions that present a selection; among the works reproduced by the museum is Scipione’s “Cardinal Decano” (1930). In 2025–2026 the exhibition “GAM 100” marked the centenary of the gallery.
