About the museum
The Accademia Nazionale di San Luca is an association of painters, sculptors and architects, known worldwide for its history, its collections, its promotion of the arts and architecture, and its role as a centre of study, thanks to the archives and libraries it holds. It is based in Palazzo Carpegna, near the Fontana di Trevi.
The academic gallery grew out of donations and bequests from artists, heirs and collectors who supported the institution over the centuries. Since the beginning of the 2000s its rooms have been the subject of a profound museological project; on 16 May 2025 it reopened with a new display centred on the main nucleus of the collections.
The rooms commemorate, among other things, the bequest of Fabio Rosa (1681–1753), who donated more than 180 canvases to the Academy; the Putto reggifestone attributed to Raphael, which entered the collections in 1834 with the bequest of Jean-Baptiste Wicar; Raphael’s altarpiece with Saint Luke painting the Virgin; a selection of architectural drawings; the works from the Balestra competitions, established from 1768; and those linked to the years in which Antonio Canova was prince of the Academy.
