About the museum
Caccamo Castle stands on a rocky spur at about 513 metres above sea level, overlooking the valley and the Rosamarina lake. The site was probably already occupied by an Arab-period fortification or watchtower. In the 12th century the lord of Caccamo, Matteo Bonello, had structures in the Norman style built there. In the castle, in 1160, the Norman barons conspired against King William I in the so-called Sala della Congiura (Conspiracy Hall).
In the 14th century the Chiaramonte family enlarged and transformed the building, and at the end of the century Giaimo de Prades strengthened it by building the Dammuso tower on the south side. With the passage to the Amato family, who bought the barony in 1646, the medieval structures were largely replaced and the castle became a noble palace with painted wooden ceilings and frescoed friezes. After 1813 it belonged to the De Spucches, princes of Galati; an earthquake in 1823 destroyed the keep.
In 1963 the Sicilian Region bought the castle, and in 1974 restoration began. Today it is regionally owned and open to the public, with management entrusted to the Municipality of Caccamo. The route includes, among other things, the stables, the chapel, the guardrooms, the prisons with prisoners’ graffiti, the Sala della Congiura, the armoury with a large coat of arms and the western terrace with a panoramic view.
