About the museum
The civic museum was founded in 1873 to collect and preserve the finds of the area and is located in the centre of Termini Imerese. It occupies a complex built in several phases, whose oldest core dates back to the late 14th century, and includes a 15th-century chapel, entirely frescoed, and a 15th-century church.
The archaeology section holds materials from the excavations of the ancient Greek colony of Himera, with coins, architectural fragments, statuettes and everyday objects from the Greek and Roman periods, together with Latin, Arabic and Norman inscriptions and the portrait of Giulia Drusilla. The picture gallery presents sacred and secular paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a triptych attributed to Gaspare da Pesaro, a relief of the Madonna and Child by Antonello Gagini, works by Pietro Novelli and a terracotta sketch attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The route also includes a section on 19th-century Termini Imerese, two rooms with the sculptures of the local artist Filippo Sgarlata, and collections of mineralogy and malacology. The museum is a member of the Rete dei musei comunali della Sicilia.
