Photographic exhibition on the history of the Greek colony of Himera, from the battles and destruction of 409 BC to the archaeological rediscovery of the site. The images are by photographers of the Scuola Siciliana di Fotografia.
About the museum
The museum is named after the archaeologist Pirro Marconi from Verona, who unearthed the Temple of Victory of Himera between 1929 and 1930. It opened on 30 June 2016 in contrada Buonfornello, in the territory of Termini Imerese, inside a farmhouse complex restored with European funds, and is part of the Parco archeologico di Himera, Solunto e Iato.
Himera was founded in 648 BC by colonists from Chalcis and Dorians on the Tyrrhenian coast, at the mouth of the northern Imera river. The museum offers an overview of the main archaeological contexts of the lower town and complements the route already open to visitors in the Antiquarium.
One section is devoted to the Temple of Victory, with material from the excavations of 1929, 1966 and 1984–85, and to the finds from the necropolises, including mass graves and horse burials linked to the battles of 480 and 409 BC. The galleries hold a reconstruction model of the temple, lion-head water spouts, casts of skeletons and skulls with trepanation holes. A permanent video projection reconstructs the city and the sanctuary in 3D. The route continues outdoors, among stretches of walls from the 6th–5th-century BC settlement, the remains of a water mill and a 20th-century farmhouse.
